New home construction sales dip, still up overall

New home sales
The U.S. Census Bureau data for May shows that sales of new homes fell 2.1% after improving for two months straight and inventory hitting historic lows. Compared to May 2010, however, new home sales are up 13.5%, a number which many had not predicted possible.
New home construction hit historic lows in February and many said that not only would home builder stocks never rebound to where they were in the past, but economists have asserted that the new home sector would never be the same.
Unemployment continues as homeowners are increasingly upside down in their homes or simply struggling because of underemployment or unemployment, while builders continue to struggle with obtaining financing to build more inventory.

A Missouri company that’s opening a Paradise Bakery and Café near the Tucson Mall has plans for expansion across the city.
The Traditional Bakery Inc., a Springfield, Mo.-based franchisee of Paradise Bakery’s owner, Panera Bread, plans to open about four or five of the stores across Tucson, said Renee Eiffert, Traditional Bakery’s director of marketing.
Traditional Bakery operates 30 locations in Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma, selling bread, pastries, sandwiches and coffee under the Panera Bread banner.
The Tucson stores will all be called Paradise Bakery and Café, Eiffert said.
The first will open at The Corner, a shopping center under construction at North Oracle and West Wetmore roads that will also include Nordstrom Rack. T

A Bountiful man has been sentenced to 5½ years in federal prison and ordered to pay his share of $2.38 million in restitution for his role in a mortgage-fraud ring that used straw buyers to obtain inflated loans for dozens of houses.
Ronald William Haycock Sr., 63, was convicted by a federal court jury in December of money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in connection with the scheme in 2006 and 2007.

I could not resist commenting on the problems associated with the recent article in the LA Times about Best Buy’s announcement to start an aggressive program of subleasing a portion of their stores to others. I was amazed that so few business analyst chose to comment on what is one of the most massive downsizing effort yet announced.
As most of the readers of my GLG News analyses know by now, I have been watching with interest as so many of the retailers with oversized stores grasp on to the notion that a massive downsizing program is the magic bullet that will solve all their problems. We
