City purchases 18 acres for reservoir

Tucson purchased roughly 18 acres of land just north of Tucson International Airport to build a 32-million-gallon reservoir.
The money for the $2.3 million purchase came from the city’s Capital Improvement Program budget, said Fernando Molina, a Tucson Water spokesman.
The entire renewable water project – which will provide a backup for the Hayden/Udall Water Treatment Facility in Avra Valley – has an estimated cost of $130 million and is on a 10-year schedule for completion.
“These expenses have no impact on the city’s general fund,” Molina said. “All operations and debt repayment are funded through revenues received from water sales.”
The parcel was purchased as an end-point storage reservoir for water from the Central Arizona Project, Molina said. The CAP water will be delivered through a long transmission main that will run south of the Tucson Mountains.
Tucson purchased the land from Ferr-Conn Partners LLP. Bill DiVito, Bob Davis and Howard Kong of Grubb & Ellis represented the seller in the transaction.
